Weekend sports round up

Football:

Peterborough United extended their unbeaten run to eight in all competitions with an excellent 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic. Sam Hughes, Abraham Odoh and Malik Mothersille with the goals.

The Daniels seven game unbeaten league run has come to end as they went down 4-0 at 4th placed Bedford Town. All the goals coming in the second half. Daniels drop from 5th to 6th.

Uppingham Town extended their lead to four points at the top of Premier Division of the Peterborough and District League after a 5-1 Rutland derby win away at Oakham United.

Henry Moxley opened the scoring for Uppingham Town on ten minutes then adding a second on 21 minutes. Oakham United briefly got back into the game on 28 minutes through a Joe Hatherill goal from close range. A two-goal advantage was restored by Sam Blackwell on 34 minutes.

On 73 minutes, Henry Moxley completed an excellent all-round performance as he slotted home for his hat-trick. Substitute, Fynn Seggie with the 5th on 88 minutes.

Bourne Town came out the winners 1-0 against Eastwood at home in the top of the table game in the United Counties Premier Division North, thanks to a superb strike on 77 minutes from Robbie Ellis. The result means Bourne Town are just one point behind Eastwood.

Deeping Rangers had to share the points as they drew 1-1 at home to Boston Town that was after Dan Dougill had given them the lead.

Blackstones home game was postponed due to a torrential downpour.

Women’s Football:

Stamford AFC despite being the stronger side in the first half lost 3-0 away at Sheffield FC in their penultimate game of the season, which was brought to an early end following a serious head injury.

Oakham United beat Birstall United Social at home 5-2 to complete a league double. The goals coming from Molly Cunningham and Victoria Smith with two each and Zina Cheikh.

Cambridgeshire Women’s League Division 1 saw Ketton Sports pick up a good point at 4th placed Wimblington Ladies in a 2-2 draw. Fran Kavanagh and Sascha Smith the scorers.

In Division 2, Deeping Rangers maintained their 100% league record beating bottom club Netherton United Reserves 9-1. A Yas Green hat-trick, Harriet Coles brace, Jade Butler, Hannah Murray, Ali Stokoe and an own goal.

Youth Football:

Leicestershire Youth League Under 17 Division 2 - Braunstone Athletic 0-1 Oakham United - Under 16 Division 3 - Cottesmore 2 -2 Anstey Nomads.

Leicester & District Sunday Juniors League Under 15 - Loughborough Lions 5 - 2 Cottesmore

Peterborough & District League:

Under 18 Division 1 – Stamford AFC Young Daniels 1-3 Thurlby Tiger

Rugby:

Stamford sealed a 100% home record for the season in Counties 1 as the won the Lincolnshire derby against Bourne by 22 points to seven so ending their five-game winning run.

In a hard-fought game in poor weather conditions, the try scorers for Stamford were Ed Cox, Jack Jones and James Wilson. Fraser Hutton with two conversions and a penalty.

Moving to Counties 2, and a much-needed win for Oakham as they beat Northampton Boys’ Brigade Old Boys in a tough encounter 21-18. This included a brace of tries for Sam Weatherall and three conversions for Lewis Crellin.

The result sees Oakham off the bottom and replaced by their visitors who have played a game more. Oakham are home to Rushden and Higham next weekend whilst Northampton Boys’ Brigade Old Boys play them in their last fixture on 5 April.

Women’s Rugby:

Stamford Women 1sts produced a great team performance as they completed the double over Welwyn Ladies in the Women’s NC 1 East by 36 points to 32, making it three wins in a row.

Daisy Attley penalty opened the scoring on seven minutes and a try from Sammy Pocock four minutes later giving Stamford an early 8-0 advantage. The visitors scored two quick tries to lead 10-8 on 22 minutes. A Jorja Matchwick and superb individual try from inside the Stamford half by Kieva Clegg meant Stamford led 18-10 at the break.

Welwyn with a try early in the second half made it 18-15, which was cancelled out by Nash Hadley to restore the eight-point advantage. Again, the visitors fought back to make 23-22 to Stamford. Kieva Clegg scored her second try on the hour only for visitors to respond with a try. A Sarah Mitchelson try and Daisy Attley penalty made it 36-27. Welwyn with one more try to complete the scoring for the afternoon. Stamford having to play the last two minutes with 14 as Sarah Mitchelson received a yellow card.
