St. George's Barracks development expected in the next few years

St. George's Barracks at North Luffenham will get built on over the next few years, but it's unlikely to be at the scale of the 2300 homes originally planned.

A nature area near the runways is being investigated as to whether it qualifies for special Scientific interest status. Leader of Rutland County Council, Gale Waller, says it will form part of their plan eventually,

‘Clearly when it is vacated, which won't be until 2026, we believe it will be a vacant brownfield site or at least 1/3 of it will be brownfield. I would argue the rest isn't, but I expect housing to go at St. George's. It's just a question of what sort of housing numbers and that sort of thing. Also, the last time I met with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, they are the people who look after Defence property, they thought that where the runways were, that's for 2/3 I refer to, that was being reviewed as a potential site of special scientific interest. And of course if that happens, if it is so designated they wouldn't be able to build on it anyway.’
