Rutland youth sailing team are crowned national champions

The Rutland Hydra Team have been crowned national champions at last weekend's Royal Yacht Association Women’s Team Racing National Championship.

A team of Rutland teenage sailors have beaten university teams from across the country in Rutland Sailing Club’s first major event of the season.

The Rutland Hydra Team, whose ages range from 13 to 19, won all 14 of their races to be placed 1st overall in the national event that was held at Rutland Water over the weekend. They are now the Royal Yacht Association Womens’ Team Racing National Champions for 2021.

Event Director Fiona Tylecote said that the home team were well prepared:

“They were absolutely amazing!” said Fiona “We have been quite lucky that we have been able to train on Rutland Water with the lockdown as it is right on our doorstep. [As a result] the team were then able to start racing at the weekend fast out of the blocks.” Fiona also praised the teenage team for keeping level heads and 'just getting on with it', despite the daunting prospect of sailing against university students several years older.

The London Castaways team finished 2nd with 11 race wins and the Oxford University & Alumni team finished 3rd with 9 wins.
