Rutland Water bathing and swimming areas to get regular water quality monitoring

Whitwell Creek area of Rutland Water

It follows work by Anglian Water and Rutland's MP with Whitwell Creek and Sykes Lane beach at Empingham being added to over 400 sites across the country where water quality will be regularly checked from May to September.

It’s been confirmed today that two areas of Rutland Water already designated for supervised swimming and bathing have been added to the government’s list of official bathing waters.  Whitwell Creek where both regular open water swimming and the aqua park are launching for the new season soon, and Sykes Lane where the water is roped off by the beach are both going to benefit from regular water-quality monitoring, taking the number of sites across the country to the most ever, at 424.  The government says the scheme has also led to higher standards of water quality, as criteria have also become stricter over the past few years, and action can also be taken if minimum standards aren’t being met.  The water at both sites at Rutland Water will be regularly measured between 15th May and 30th September.  The decision to include the sites follows work by Anglian Water and Rutland’s MP, Alicia Kearns and only sites that are in demand for swimmers and bathers, and have suitable infrastructure such as toilets are considered for the scheme.
