Rutland County Council is encouraging residents to have their say on a proposed 4.99% increase in Council Tax, of which 3% is to fund adult social care services. The Council has launched a public consultation on its latest draft budget which contains spending plans and Council Tax proposals for the year 2022/23. The consultation period runs until Wednesday 9 February.
In addition to an online consultation, representatives of the Council will be in Oakham Market Place on 26 and 29 January, and in Uppingham on 4 February. Karen Payne, Portfolio Holder for Finance, told Rutland and Stamford Sound that despite the challenges to balance the books, the Council is very keen to hear from local residents. If anyone has an issue with going online, the face to face events will provide an opportunity to complete the consultation with the assistance of Council staff.
Rutland currently receives less government funding per household than other councils with the same responsibilities. As a result, just over 80% of the Council’s funding comes from Council Tax contributions, compared to a national average of around 60% for other councils. If the proposed increase is approved, the average Council Tax for a Band D property in Rutland would rise by £1.75 per week, or 43p for anyone receiving benefits
