Places still available for Stamford Kiwanis' first Raft Race

Could you be on a raft on the River Welland in a few weeks' time? The Stamford Kiwanis are looking for groups and individuals to fill the remaining places for their first event.

They're capping it at 24 rafts for the big day out on the Meadows on Sunday the 30th of June. Steve Marsh from the Kiwanis explains exactly how it works and the rules:

"Teams can be up to six people. It has to be a raft, it can't be a boat. So everything on there has got to be made. We're not allowed to use metal drums: we're talking to the Environment Agency to keep the river clean. But everyone's happy with all the procedures we've put in place.

So basically, turn up with your raft partially built or in bits on the day on the Meadows. They'll be assembled there in the morning. Twelve o'clock, first race starts. And they'll be going off at five minute intervals. There may be some overtaking if there are some slow. And if it's anything like the Deepings raft race, we know that the entertaining spot to be is the start because some rafts may not make it as far as the start line."
