Mid Lent Fair returns to Stamford next week

After a two-year absence due to Covid, the Mid Lent Fair will return to Stamford next week with over 100 attractions and rides for all to enjoy.

The Mid-Lent Fair is set to make a welcome return to the streets of Stamford next week. For the past two years the fair has had to be cancelled; now, following relaxation of Covid restrictions, the Fair can once again bring its colour and vibrancy to the area and will run from Monday 28 March until Saturday 02 April.

Boasting over 100 attractions and rides, the Mid Lent Fair will be set up around the centre of Stamford, in Broad Street and Bath Row. The opening ceremony will be performed on Monday by Stamford’s Mayor. Cllr Gloria Johnson, at 6pm by the Waltzer on Broad Street.

Due to the setup, operation and then dismantling of the fair, there will be road closures through Stamford. These are:

  • Friday 25th March, 6pm, top half of Cattlemarket Car Park.
  • Saturday 26th March, 5pm, Castle Dyke, Bath Row Car Park (both sides) and Gooches Court Car Park.
  • Sunday 27th March, 8am; Castle Street, Sheepmarket and Red Lion Square.
  • Sunday 27th March, 12 noon; Broad Street, Red Lion Street, Star Lane and Crown Street.

All road closures will be lifted at 6am on Sunday 3rd April.

The Mid Lent Fair is a traditional event that has a long history in England. As far back as 1494, King Richard III issued a Royal Charter for the fairs. The traditional opening ceremony, however, now involves the town mayor reading a proclamation made by King William IV in the early 19th century, setting out rules and behaviour for the fair. In those times, Mid Lent Fairs would mostly have been about the selling of livestock and other trade – quite different to the light, sounds and colour of the modern fair.
