Local cyclist wins silver in the Olympics

History was made yesterday in Paris for a Stamfordian as the first Olympian from the town in over 90 years secured a medal.

Ed Lowe won silver in the men's track cycling. Huw Williams was watching the action

‘Stamford's Ed Lowe, in his first Olympics, has won silver with Hamish Turnbull and Jack Carlin for Great Britain in the men's cycling team Sprint final with a time of 41.814 in Paris. Not since Lord David Burghley, who won silver in the 4 by 400 metres relay in their 1932 Games in Los Angeles, has someone born in Stamford won an Olympic medal. Lord Burghley previously won gold in the 400 metres hurdles in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. The Burghley House collection still includes those medals. Coincidentally, Lord Burghley made his Olympic debut in Paris in 1924. The only other person born in Stamford to win an Olympic medal at bronze was Frederick Hibbins at the 1912 Stockholm Games in the team cross country.  The Netherlands retaining the title from Tokyo in a time of 40.949. A new world record with Great Britain once again winning silver'.
