The Birch Tree Café opened in Easton on the Hill on Tuesday 24 January. The café is partly staffed by young adults with Down’s Syndrome and aims to give young people with the condition an opportunity to work and socialise as part of a vibrant community. The café offers quality casual food and drink in spacious, attractive surroundings. Car parking and bike stands are available for visitors.
The café has converted part of the old Easton Garford school at a cost of £250,000. Funding to convert and equip the building and launch the café came from many grants and donations, and from many local businesses and tradespeople who gave their services and materials for free or at reduced rates.
As well as the café there are relaxation rooms and spaces for other activities. The café aims to help its enthusiastic young staff members to develop workplace skills and confidence, thereby improving their employment prospects and independence, so they can realise their own ambitions.
