The Sir Nigel Gresley, one of the iconic and beautiful A4 Class locomotives designed by the eponymous engineer, is due to pass through Rutland and Stamford today, on its way to visit the Nene Valley Railway.
A steam train, not seen at Nene Valley Railway since 1995, arrives there this afternoon and passes through Melton, Oakham and Stamford on its way to Orton Mere station on the Nene Valley Line.
The 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is due to pass through Melton, Oakham and Stamford railway stations between 1244 and around 1315 and then onto Uffington and Helpston. The famous steam locomotive was saved from the scrapyard by volunteers in 1965 and is visiting Nene Valley for a fortnight from today, after £1m was raised for its restoration.
The Sir Nigel Gresley is an A4 Class locomotive and 60007 was built in 1937. It has particular significance within the Rutland and Stamford area, as its brother loco, The Mallard, broke the steam locomotive speed record, reaching 126mph along the East Coast Mainline, near what is now called Mallard Pass.
