Cross country day at Defender Burghley Horse Trials

Source: Piggy March Facebook page

Up to 100,000 visitors are expected at Defender Burghley Horse Trials today at Burghley House near Stamford, as people picnic near the cross country course to get a glimpse of the world's top five star eventers and their horses.

Burghley Ambassador 2022 winner and also winner of this year's Burghley Young Event Horse for the second time in three years, Piggy March, says competing in this five star event is great grounding for all the combinations.

‘It's good to have a bit of Burghley experience here and a few of us have been lucky enough to have some horses over the years. Even when you don't win it or you're not in the top ten, just getting the experience of riding round the terrain that is here, knowing how to ride a horse with a lot of care and horsemanship. To keep the energy and engine going there with your horse to finish at the end of 11 minutes, 11 1/2 minutes through the undulations of this course and keeping your horses believing and it really enjoying their job to try to get out on top. I think that comes with a few years of experience of being able to do that. Once you can do that and you've got the feel for it then it stands you in quite good stead. It can just put you a couple of notches ahead of a couple of other riders going into your cross country day.’
