The clean up continues at Rutland Water Nature Reserve after hundreds of litres of heating oil leaked from a tank at a property in Egleton.
500 pads have been used so far to soak up the oil which flowed into a brook through Egleton Meadows and the area of special scientific interest. Senior Species and Recording Officer of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust Tim Sexton says they were lucky that the flow through the brook was slowed down by debris caused by earlier flooding.
"Yeah, as chance would have it, you know, a couple of weeks ago, we had some flood debris coming down through the brook. It got caught up by some brambles in the brook by one of the tunnels here, the bridge over the access track and fortunately, that caused the oil to back up a little bit. We'd not had much rain for the two weeks prior, so it was quite slow moving at the time. So we were able to actually put some special booms that soak up oil from the water's surface and also use some oil soaking pads. In fact, we used about 500 of those in the last couple of weeks to soak up what residual oil we could from damaging any of the wildlife on the reserve."
