Bumper Summer Holiday send off for Rutland and Stamford this weekend

Rutland Beer Festival, Oakham

The first day of Autumn term may be lurking just around the corner but Rutland and Stamford aren’t done with the Summer Holidays just yet…

It might seem like only yesterday that the summer break began and, for many, next week’s return to school for the Autumn term has come around all too quickly. But before we start polishing those neglected school shoes and turning on the central heating, here are just some of the events planned in Rutland and Stamford this Bank Holiday weekend to help us bid a fond farewell to Summer:

First up is the Rutland Jigsaw Festival, run by Oakham in Bloom volunteers, at the Victoria Hall Ballroom in Oakham. Running from Saturday 28th until Monday 30th August, the festival will be displaying well over 300 fully assembled jigsaws for view and sale, along with brand new, unopened puzzles at knockdown prices. There will also be boxed pre-loved puzzles for sale. Admission is free and proceeds will be going towards the library gardens. Doors open from 10am to 4pm each day.

Staying with Oakham, the next one for the diary is the Rutland 21st Annual Beer Festival. Held at The Grainstore Brewery, Oakham, this festival brings together over 70 real ales from around the UK along with BBQs each night and live music. Entry is free although there is a £3 deposit on a commemorative festival beer glass. The event is an epic – running from Thursday 26th to Monday 30th August. The Easton on the Hill Gala and Beer Festival is a firm local favourite and will be held from Thursday 26th to Monday 30th August, at the Blue Bell Inn. Highlights include over 30 beers and ciders, live free music festival on the Sunday, a cricket match on Saturday and even an 'Easton's Got Talent' show on stage! Proceeds will help support the local community and the Blue Bell Inn which is funding much of the entertainment. Further details can be found here: www.eastononthehill.com

The Stamford Car Show is run by the Stamford and District Round Table and hopes to raise money for the local community. It will be held on Sunday 29th August at Stamford Meadows and as well as free admission, boasts over 500 iconic vehicles for spectators to enjoy. Stamford will also be hosting its first Diversity Festival on the Rec Ground on Monday 31st August. Visitors will be able to listen to music from around the world including the Gambia, Eastern Europe and local artists. Food and craft stalls will be open for business as well. Finally, after having to be cancelled last year, Langham Village Street Market promises a fantastic day out for this Bank Holiday Monday, with stalls selling ‘everything imaginable’! Proceeds will be going towards upkeep of the Village Hall. The market will be open from 10:30am to 4pm and more details can be found here: Langham Street Market (langhaminrutland.org)

With something for everyone on offer this weekend, then, perhaps we don’t have to think about those shorter autumn days just yet…!
