Over 2,000 people have now signed a petition by Rutland MP Alicia Kearns against the County Council's proposals to move to a three-week black bin collection
to save money when they move to collect food waste separately from the Spring. The Council says they'll be forced to look at reducing the frequency of black bin collections unless they get more money from the Government to carry out the changes. Portfolio holder for Transport, Environment and Communities Councillor Christine Wise says they haven't made a decision yet, but they have looked at how other authorities introduced the extra bin.
‘If the capacity in the existing black bin stays the same, then there's no incentive to separate out food waste. So other authorities have gone to a three weekly collection or had smaller black bins. Now we know from earlier consultations most people would prefer the smaller black bins, but that would take quite a lot of money to put every house in Rutland onto smaller black bins. So at the moment we've deferred that decision until we know what money we're getting from the Government’.
